What happens when nearly half of a college’s student body consists of dual enrollment students, many from historically underserved backgrounds? At Lee College, almost 40% of its enrollment in 2024-2025 is comprised of 3,821 dual enrollment students, with a diverse population that is 54% Hispanic and 8% Black/African American, and 65% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Acknowledging the need for innovative solutions, the college utilized the Dual Enrollment Survey of Student Engagement (DESSE) to identify how these students navigate academics and access support services. In response, Lee College implemented a proactive advising model centered on equity, scale, and student voice, fundamentally reshaping student engagement with academic support. Over four semesters, this approach significantly increased advising interactions—from 1,926 to 5,116—and improved the percentage of students meeting with advisors for course selection from 52% to 62%. Enhanced academic outcomes followed, with core requirement completions rising from 48 to 77 and certificate completions increasing from 122 to 187, confirming that the new advising framework effectively bolstered student engagement, persistence, and credential attainment in sustainable, equity-driven ways.
This session presents Columbus State Community College’s expansive educational pathways, from high school through associate and bachelor’s degrees, developed in collaboration with local partners including the City of Columbus, Columbus City Schools, The Ohio State University, and civic/industry leaders. It highlights the Columbus Promise—a tuition-free entry to Columbus State for local high school graduates and its impact on enrollment, FAFSA completion, and persistence—and expands the model with the Buckeye Bridge to create a seamless transfer pathway to The Ohio State University without financial barriers. Attendees will learn about the design, implementation, and data-informed evolution of these initiatives, explore the cross-sector partnerships that enabled scaling, and engage in interactive polling and small-group exercises to map transfer challenges in their own contexts and compare them with the Columbus model.
