Data-Driven Student Support: NECC’s Journey to Real-Time Interventions and Improved Outcomes

The Situation

Northern Essex Community College (NECC) is a public institution located in Massachusetts, dedicated to creating a vibrant, inclusive learning community that values diversity, collaboration, and innovation. Serving a diverse student body across its two campuses, NECC supports first-generation students, career changers, and those seeking personal or professional growth. The college’s mission is to empower students to meet their educational and career goals by offering accessible, affordable education that drives academic achievement and workforce readiness.

In alignment with its mission, NECC is committed to improving student outcomes and promoting equity. However, the college faced increasingly complex challenges in managing and accessing the data necessary to provide timely support to students. Facing dramatic enrollment growth and rapidly shifting student demographics, NECC recognized the need for a more cohesive, data-driven approach to help all students thrive.

The institution had relied on systems like Starfish and surveys like Noel-Levitz to gather student data, but these tools were heavily dependent on faculty participation. With many adjunct instructors balancing multiple jobs, consistent adoption of these tools was difficult, leading to fragmented data. Without real-time insights, faculty often struggled to identify students who needed immediate support. As a result, NECC’s ability to deliver timely interventions for at-risk students was compromised, and opportunities to assist struggling students were frequently missed.

Moreover, NECC’s Banner system, while robust, was difficult for faculty and staff to navigate. They often had to submit manual requests to the Institutional Research (IR) office, waiting days or weeks for data. By the time reports were delivered, it was often too late to act on the insights. This lag in accessing relevant data was a critical barrier to student success, as faculty couldn’t provide the timely interventions students needed.

Without a centralized system, data was siloed across departments, further limiting NECC’s ability to track student performance holistically. As Kirsten Kortz, Executive Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, explained, “In Tutoring, for example, we could easily track the students who came in for help—but we had no visibility into the students who truly needed support but didn’t come forward.” This lack of a full-picture view left many students without the help they needed to overcome barriers to success.

“We’ve seen a growing culture of inquiry. Faculty now realize how easy it is to access data and ask better questions without waiting weeks for reports.”

The Solution

NECC embarked on a journey to transform how it used data to support its students, turning to ZogoTech, a centralized data platform, to revolutionize how faculty and staff could access and act on student information. The goal was simple but profound: provide timely, actionable insights that would directly impact student success and ensure no student fell through the cracks.

What made ZogoTech different from previous systems was its ability to empower the IR office to take the lead. Instead of relying on faculty to change their workflows and adopt new systems, ZogoTech allowed NECC to consolidate data centrally. This approach freed faculty from time-consuming processes and gave them real-time access to the insights that mattered most for supporting students.

The rollout began with power users in key departments, who quickly became champions of the platform. These early adopters saw the immediate value of ZogoTech’s real-time data access, enabling them to identify at-risk students early and intervene when it mattered most. The phased introduction minimized disruption while allowing faculty to adopt the system at their own pace. As more departments embraced the platform, ZogoTech’s potential to change the student experience became clear across the college.

ZogoTech seamlessly integrated with NECC’s existing systems, like Banner, bringing together once-fragmented data into a single, intuitive interface. This meant that faculty no longer had to rely on IT for custom scripts or wait for manual reports from the IR office. For the first time, they had real-time access to student performance indicators, allowing them to act immediately when they noticed a student was struggling.

This shift was transformative for NECC. Where before faculty might have waited weeks for a report, they could now open ZogoTech and get the insights they needed in minutes. As one faculty member noted, “ZogoTech enables us to do real-time data debunking in meetings. It’s not about guessing anymore; it’s about using data to ask better questions and make informed decisions in real time.”

But it wasn’t just about speed—it was about fostering collaboration and a shared commitment to student success. ZogoTech broke down the silos that had previously limited communication between departments. Faculty, tutors, advisors, and coaches could now access consistent data, allowing them to coordinate their efforts more effectively. Whether in tutoring, academic advising, or coaching, everyone was working from the same playbook, ensuring no student went unnoticed.

ZogoTech’s impact was also felt in the institution’s culture. Faculty and staff became more comfortable with data, not as an obligation but as a tool for making a real difference. “We’ve seen a growing culture of inquiry,” added Kortz. “Faculty now realize how easy it is to access data and ask better questions without waiting weeks for reports.” This cultural shift empowered NECC to take student success to new heights, where every decision was informed by data and every student received the support they needed to thrive.

The Benefits

Since implementing ZogoTech in 2016, NECC has experienced a profound transformation in how it supports students and makes data-driven decisions. With ZogoTech, the college has streamlined data access, improved collaboration across departments, and, most importantly, ensured that students receive the timely, targeted support they need to succeed. The following key outcomes demonstrate the impact of this transformation on NECC’s students and overall institutional effectiveness.

  • Real-Time Interventions for At-Risk Students: The ability to access real-time data has revolutionized NECC’s approach to student support. Previously, delays in reporting meant that faculty often missed critical opportunities to intervene. With ZogoTech, faculty can now monitor student performance—such as grades and engagement—on demand. This timely access to insights has made it possible to identify and support at-risk students before they fall too far behind. For NECC students, this shift means more opportunities to stay on track academically, improving retention rates and reducing the likelihood of dropout.

  • Collaborative, Comprehensive Student Support: Breaking down data silos has greatly enhanced cross-departmental collaboration, ensuring that students receive more holistic support. Before ZogoTech, departments like tutoring and advising operated in isolation, with limited insight into students’ broader academic journeys. Now, faculty, advisors, tutors, and coaches all have access to a unified view of student progress, enabling them to coordinate more effectively and tailor interventions to meet individual needs. This approach has been especially valuable for first-generation and underserved students, who benefit most from integrated, wraparound support.

  • Streamlined Data Access and Empowerment: ZogoTech has eliminated the bottlenecks previously caused by manual data requests. Faculty and staff no longer need to wait for Institutional Research to generate reports—they can access the data they need independently and in real time. This has allowed faculty to spend less time waiting for data and more time focusing on students’ needs. For students, it means quicker responses to academic challenges and more targeted support when it’s needed most.

  • A Culture of Data-Driven Decision-Making: ZogoTech has fostered a growing culture of inquiry at NECC, where data is no longer seen as just an administrative task but as a key tool for enhancing student success. Faculty are now more confident in their ability to use data to ask meaningful questions and make informed decisions, knowing that they have immediate access to reliable insights. This cultural shift has empowered faculty to be more proactive, improving teaching strategies and support mechanisms across the institution, which directly benefits students.

  • Scalability and Flexibility for Future Growth: As NECC’s needs have evolved, ZogoTech has proven to be a flexible and scalable solution, capable of adapting to future challenges. This ensures that the college can continue to offer a student-centered approach as it grows, responding to the changing demographics and needs of its diverse student body. The adaptability of ZogoTech has equipped NECC to maintain a future-proof approach to data management while keeping the focus squarely on improving student outcomes.

The implementation of ZogoTech at NECC has been a game-changer in how the college supports its students. By providing real-time data, enhancing collaboration, and promoting a data-driven culture, NECC has significantly improved student retention and success. For students, ZogoTech ensures that the right support is available when they need it most, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.

“ZogoTech has been an incredible partner for NECC,” closes Kortz. “They understand the unique challenges we face and have worked with us every step of the way to ensure we’re using data in a way that truly impacts our students. It’s not just about the technology—it’s about the shared commitment to student success. With ZogoTech, we’re able to provide timely, meaningful support to students, and that’s something that transforms lives.”
