Retention by Program
The example below shows retention, graduation and transfer by
academic program for a particular cohort. This view reveals
interesting trends (below, you will find an explanation of the
terms).
For example, looking at the MATH majors, one can see that the
drop out rate ( )
is much lower than average. However, looking closer, Estudias
also shows that among these students, there is a very large number
were retained, but changed their major ( ).
This may indicate that the students who are ambitious enough to
choose mathematics as a major are more likely than average to stay
enrolled at the institution (even if they change their major).

Students are grouped into one of several categories:
- Retained in Major: students who returned the
following term and did not change their major, showing
departmental retention.
- Retained in Institution: students who returned the
following term, but to a different major, showing institutional
retention.
- Graduated, Returned to Major: students who graduated
and returned to the school the following term with the same
major
- Graduated, Returned to Institution: students who
graduated and returned to the school the following term, but
with a different major
- Graduated, Left Institution: students who graduated
and did not return to the institution
- Transfer Out: Students who, according to National
Student Clearinghouse data, transferred to another institution
the following term (Requires optional module to integrate
with NSC data)
- Stop Out: students who did not graduate, did not
transfer, and did not return the following term, but did return
some subsequent term
- Drop Out: students who did not graduate, did not
transfer, and did not return for any following terms
